The Overall Length of a PeakTone mouthpiece is the dimension between the top face of the cup and the end face of the stem. The Overall Length Setting in the Show Outer Shape Menu Item, provides settings from -1 (shortening) to +1 (lengthening). The entry below the slider reports on the range available, as shown in the diagram below. This shows that the current length of the mouthpiece is 87 mm while the minimum possible length, at the -1 setting, is 66.35 mm and the maximum possible, at the +1 setting is 107.00 mm.
The Overall length Setting allows the mouthpiece to be shortened by varying the length between the stem and the mouthpiece bowl. The darker-coloured area in the upper image in the diagram below indicates the area whose length is to be modified. The upper part of the middle image shows what the mouthpiece looks like once the shortened section has been removed totally. The lower portion of the bottom image shows what the mouthpiece looks like once it has been lengthened to its greatest extent.
All mouthpieces may be lengthened by 20 mm but the extent of the possible shortening measurement varies enormously. On the tuba mouthpiece, for example, the cup takes up abour half of its length and the stem pretty much of the remainder. As a result, these mouthpieces may not be shortened by any significant amount. The trumpet is very much at the other end of the spectrum as its cup takes up only around a fifth of its overall length. This mouthpiece can, therefore, be shrunk by a considerable amount. The
