Athenaeus, when writing about the creation of the Phrygian aulos by adding a horn (presumably to a normal aulos) referred to the brass instrument whose output end it terminated by a horn, saying that this process is similar to adding a horn (keras) to a trumpet (salpinx) as a bell (kodon):
Playing a loud and deep-voiced pipe (aulos), with tripping metre, meaning the Phrygian thereby; for it is deep and grave, and hence they tie the piece of horn (keras) to it, answering to the bells of trumpets (salpinx kodon).
