Trumpeter in a Parade of Offerings in Abydos

Iconography | IC572

Find Spot: Abydos, Egypt

Date of Illustration: 1279–1213 BCE

Description: In a section from a scene depicting the "Transport and parade of offerings" in the temple of Ramesses II in Abydos (Court A, left of the entrance side), a single trumpet stands ahead of the parade. Hickmann suggests that the holders of the fans are highly-placed personnages and certainly not ordinary soldiers. The trumpeter is dressed in the same way as the fanbearers so it has been suggested that, as the group led by player is composed exclusively of officers and holders of standards, the trumpet player was probably the same level as them.
