Find Spot: Becan, Co. Mayo, lreland
Current Location: National Museum of Ireland, Dublin, Accession No.: W.145(WK.274)
Condition: Fragmentary
Description: A wooden instrument of straight form nearly two metres long with a bell diameter of 83mm. Made of two halves of willow held together by spiral bronze band.
Wilde’s description: A (probably incomplete) object comprising four curved sections of hollowed wood, each about 4 cm. diameter, found in 1837 at Killyfaddy, near Clogher, Co. Tyrone and now preserved in the National Museum (Accession number W.145 (WK. 274)). Each section is fashioned to fit one with the other, producing a continuous tube; but it is not entirely certain that the object was designed as a trumpet or horn.
